The author was an RFC officer whose secondment to the Middle East in 1916, came as a relief after the squalor of the Somme. His account of his and his comrades' operations flying against Turkish and German aviators is dramatic and hugely in…formative. The narrative describes combined operations with army, and naval units operating along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and how Tennant survived being shot down in his DH4 aircraft. After the evacuation o…f the Gallipoli Peninsular, the unitâs remnants were refitted in Egypt and then committed to the Sinai and Palestine campaigns. They took part in the battles of Rafa, Romani and Gaza, and in the advance to Jerusalem and Jericho in 1918. They ended the war after the Armistice by returning to the Gallipoli Peninsular where they had suffered so much. The book is profusely illustrated by a range of interesting black and white photos; and an appendix on the unitâs horses plus a Roll of Honour, list of awards etc.

Condition: New. 2004 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1934). SB. xviii+292pp with 13 b/w photos and three mapsPublished Price £22 Originally The Cambridgeshires were a line regiment, 30th Foot, raised in 1702. Following the Cardwell Reforms it became, in 1881, 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment. However, it continued to exis…t as a Volunteer regiment till 1908 when, with the creation of the Territorial Force by Haldane, it became a TF Regiment. When war broke out it was stationed in Cambridge, with the East Midland Brigade, East Anglian Division - a TF formation. In February 1915 it left the division and went to France where it joined the 82nd Brigade, 27th Division, a regular army formation which had been created in November/December 1914 from battalions returning from India, Hong Kong and Tsientsin. In November 1915 it was transferred to VII Corps troops and then became Training Battalion for Third Army. At the end of February 1916 it moved again - to 118th Brigade, 37th Division, and finally, in May 1918, it was again transferred, this time to 35th Brigade, 12th Division with whom it saw out the war.All these moves are described in this history together with good accounts of the battles in which it fought - at Ypres, Somme, Passchendale, Hindenburg Line and the final advance. Appendices list 27 Battle Honours and give a summary of Honours awarded and of casualties. Approximately 10,000 of all ranks served in the battalion in France, 4,324 became casualties and of these 866 died. Finally there is a brief account of trhose units of the regiment that did not go overseas, including the Depot and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th line battalions.

Condition: New. 2007 N&M Press reprint . SB. xxiv + 356pp with numerous b/w plates maps & diagramsPublished Price £22 For many observers, the Great War, with its static trench lines and new mechanical technology - i including the arrival of the aircraft, the machine gun and the tank - wrote a final full stop to the long history… of the horse in warfare. But if the western front proved frustrating for the Cavalry, it was not the same story in the Middle Eastern theatre, as this fine book shows. As Lieutenant-General Harry Chauvel, commander of the Desert Corps, writes in his introduction; the book â demonstrate(s) to the world that the horse-soldier is just as valuable in modern warfare as he ever has been in the past. Indeed, the whole of the operations in Palestine and Syria, under General Allenby, were text-book illustrations of the perfect combinations of all arms, both in attack and defence, and the last operations in this theatre, which led to the total destruction of Turkish Arms and the elimination of Germanyâs Allies from the War, could not have been undertaken without large masses of Cavalryâ.The Desert Corps was formed in Egypt in June 1917 when the energetic Sir Edmund âBullâ Allenby took command of the Allied forces in the Middle East. Initially composed of three divisions, the arrival of the Indian Cavalry Division from France augmented the mounted Corps early in 1918. It played a major part in driving the Turks from the Suez Canal zone, and then across the Sinai Desert into Palestine. A cosmopolitan Corps, the Desert Cavalry was composed of troops from Australia, New Zealand, India and France as well as Britain. On top of determined enemy resistance, the Corps coped with intense heat, dust, sandstorms and insect bites in summer; and freezing cold and heavy rains in winter. The Corpsâ role in reconnoitering and occupying Sinai; Gaza; Palestine; Jordan and finally Syria were crucial to Allenbyâs success in capturing Jerusalem and Damascus and finally crushing Ottoman Turkish domination of the Middle East and helping to end the Great War in 1918. At a time when western forces are once again engaged in active operations in the Middle East, this book, written by a veteran of the campaign, will interest all serious students of military history in general and the role of the Cavalry in particular.

Condition: New. 2007 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1938). SB. xx+ 277pp with numerous contemporary photos of uniforms, 4 illustrations in colour & 20 maps.Published Price £28 This unit history covers a huge sweep of - mainly - colonial warfare concluding with the tragedy of Kut-al-Amara in the Great War. Originating as an inf…antry unit of the East India company in the 1770s, the battalion were captured as prisoners of war by the notorious Tipu, Sultan of Mysore. The long-running resistance of Mysore to the Companyâs rule was ended with the storming of Seringapatam by Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) beginning the close association between the Iron Duke and the Battalion. The frequently re-organised battalion was finally reformed as a Rifle Corps in time for the Sikh Wars. It took part also in the Afghan wars, distinguishing itself in the defence of Kandahar. In the Great War, the unit was mobilised and sent to Mesopotamia (Iraq) where it fought the Turks before it took part in the siege and surrender at Kut-al-Amara. It suffered greviously in Turkish captivity, but was re-formed after the war in Iraq before returning to India for field service in Waziristan.Comes complete with awards; rolls of honour; maps and photographs.
