Hardcover. Condition: New. India, during the medieval period, witnessed the arrival of European visitors and companies which served the needs of their respective empires. They have left behind numerous accounts of their experiences, which, in turn, served as an important source for understanding and reconstructing India s past by British officials and modern historians. This small-volume covers the profiles of various European travellers who came to India during the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. Most of the European visitors came from powerful nations, such as Portugal, Italy, France, and England, and formed colonies in substantial parts of Asia, America, and Africa. This book covers the Christian missionary accounts active in parts of Goa and south India. It also covers the travelogue writers and other accounts written during the reign of Vijayanagar, Deccani Sultanates, Malabari, and other south Indian kingdoms in the above said period besides the arrival of English travellers during the reign of Mughal emperors, Jahangir (r.1605-1627), Shah Jahan (r.1628-1658), and Aurangzeb (r.1658-1707), as the English East India Company was founded in 1600 to serve English interests. There are also separate sections on famous travellers, such as Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, Francois Bernier, Niccolao Manucci, and miscellaneous travellers who came during theQ 97;Mughal era. About the Author E.F. Oaten (1884-1973) was a professor of History at the Presidency College, Calcutta. He was a member of the Indian Educational Service and served from 1909 to 1928. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. About the Book:-The author has delved deep into the history of the European Travelers in India during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries to explore new avenues. He reveals that it is obvious that more than one method of approaching this subject was possible. A careful dissection and analysis of the traveler's narratives, regarding them as soulless depositories of facts rather than as human documents, would, doubtless, have been no means devoid of value. This style of treatment however was open to two serious objections. It precluded all but the slightest mention of travelers, who were not writers, or whose writing have perished, and it reduced a picturesque collection of romantic yearns to the level of unimaginative, monkish chronicle. The writer have not thought it worthwhile to adopt an elaborate system, but have aimed at simplicity, at the same time shunning uncouth forms, and avoid inconsistencies as far as possible. The book is the product of extensive study and research of European Travelers in India. The subject matter is good which generates lot of interest amongst readers. About the Author:-Edward Farley Oaten was born on 24 October 1884 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He was the son of Samuel Oaten and Hannah Ellen Lay. He was the author of a number of books, including 'My Memories of India", "European Travellers in India: During the Fifteenth, Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, the Evidence Afforded by Them with Respect to Indian Social Institutions, & the Nature & Influence of Indian Governments", and "A Sketch of Anglo-Indian Literature: (The Le Bas Prize Essay for 1907)" the last of which was dedicated to his mother. He was a student at Sidney Sussex College University of Cambridge. In 1909 he taught History and English at Presidency College, Calcutta, West Bengal, a post he held for some 7 years. He became embroiled in a dispute with some students at Presidency College which resulted in the expulsion of Subhas Chandra Bose (the Indian nationalist and freedom fighter who was then an under-graduate student) from the Presidency College, Calcutta. Bose had heard that Oaten had manhandled some Indian students, and had retaliated by beating Oaten. He served for two and a half years in the North West Frontier of India.
