Die Erzählungen aus dem Judenviertel, Schtetl oder Ghetto - geschrieben von deutschen Juden im Zeitraum von ca. 1850 bis 1914 -, bieten neben der rein literarischen Qualität eines realistischen Erzählkonzeptes die Veranschaulichung eines breiten Spektrums sozialer, religiöser und individueller Konflikte innerhalb dieser Gemeinschaft. Obwohl hauptsächlich einer nichtjüdischen Leserschaft zugedacht, war die Ghettogeschichte doch auch ein Versuch, die Erinnerung an spezifische Bräuche, Traditionen und Lebensweisen des Ghettos zu bewahren. Der Autor stellt zunächst das jüdische Jahr mit seinen Feiertagen, Bräuchen und Riten vor, die immer wieder Thema der Erzählungen sind. Im zweiten Kapitel beschreibt er die erzählerische Gattung - von ihren Ursprüngen über die künstlerischen Höhepunkte bis zur vollständigen Zerstörung der in den Ghettogeschichten beschriebenen Welt im 20. Jahrhundert.
