Paper Wraps. 1st Edition. Folio, printed stapled wraps, pp 55. Rear lower corners creased (not affecting text). Very good condition. Two contracts for pipes, one with Mephan Ferguson and the other Messrs. G and C. Hoskins. Both with very similar legal language, both with specifications by and witnessed by (printed) C.Y. O'Connor). Mephan Ferguson was awarded the first manufacturing contract for the scheme and built a fabrication plant at Falkirk (now known as Maylands) to produce half of the 60,000 pipes required. C & G Hoskins established a factory near Midland Junction (now Midland) to produce the other half. The water scheme was (and is) vital to the goldfields. A unique piece of Western Australian history.

Paper Wraps. 1st Edition. Folio, original printed stapled wraps, folding map, pp 26. The large folding map (860mm x 330mm) is "Coolgardie Water Supply, Longitudinal Setion (Following along the Railway Line) from Fremantle to Coolgardie". The upper section of the map shows the many small towns along the way, and the lower section shows the fluctuating, gradually increasing height above sea level. The through mileage is over 362 miles, and Coolgardie is 1407 feet above low water mark at Fremantle. A few very light marks last page, otherwise very clean. Very near fine condition. A very detailed report on the proposed water scheme by Engineer-in-Chief C.Y. O'Connor. The issues considered include: other potential reservoirs, other possible water sources, how the present proposal was arrived at, why the proposal was for 5,000,000 gallons per day, the practicability of the scheme, the capital cost, the working expenses, the price at which the water could be delivered, the benefit to railways, and the time the works would take. O'Connor argued that "water can be delivered in the Coolgardie district by this scheme cheaper than by any other method that we know of." With his report are a detailed breakdown of costs, his report on quantity of water per day and quantity required for the area's railway, telegrams and replies regarding the cost of the pumping engines, a report from the Engineer for Sewage and Water Supply to Towns to O'Connor regarding the Coolgardie water supply, O'Connor's remarks on reservoirs "between Southern Cross and Siberia" (Siberia was a goldfields townsite, now abandoned), a report from the Engineer for Water Supply on Goldfields, O'Connor's report on the scheme to the Consulting Engineer in England and an extract form his reply, and a detailed breakdown estimates regarding water from a reservoir on the Helena River. There is also an interesting memorandum from O'Connor to the Premier, regarding a question asked by Mr. Simpson in the Legislative Assembly. O'Connor argues that since the scheme is practicable, it would make no sense to ask for written opionions from other engineers, and that to ask for opinions on cost and probable length of time from outside engineers would take too long. (O'Connor is now well-known for his work on the ultimately successful goldfields water supply scheme, but at the time he was heavily criticised by the press and some politicians.) O'Connor's water supply scheme was (and is) vital to the goldfields. A unique piece of Western Australian history.

HIGGINS AT END OF INTRODUCTORY ESSAY AND ACCOMPANIED BY BREATHTAKING HAND-COLORED ILLUSTRATIONS. Collection of 12 broadsides originally issued individually from January-December 1935. Containing both traditional and new Irish ballads written by Yeats, F.R. Higgins, Padraic Colum, and others. With engraved music throughout. Numerous evocative and emotional hand-colored woodblock illustrations, including many by Jack B. Yeats, brother of the famed W.B Yeats. Only 300 copies printed, with only 100 copies bound and signed, making this production EXTREMELY RARE. Signed by Yeats and Higgins at the end of their preface, Anglo-Irish Ballads. "Yeats is now seen as one of a handful of Irish writers whose influence and example helped create twentieth-century modernist literature in the English language.his huge international reputation is securely based on the mystery and grandeur of his late verse and the poignancy of his love poetry, but he first came to fame as the exotically Celtic poet of a 'new' nationalist Ireland: almost single-handed, he made Irishness culturally fashionable. Spearheading a great cultural renaissance, he moved into his maturity as the voice of his country" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography) . It was not merely Yeats, however, who is responsible for arousing Irish patriotism. The Cuala Press, a small press started by Yeat's sister Elizabeth, is regarded as one of the first publishing houses to bring attention to Irish literature, art and music. Her production of Broadsidesis no different. "The glory that once was Ireland and could again be Ireland was the fire that burned unquenched in the mind and will of Elizabeth Corbett Yeats" (Colby Library Quarterly) . Dublin: Cuala Press, 1935. Small folio, original cloth backed boards with paper label to upper cover. Complete with what is almost certainly the original plain unlettered dust jacket (we can find no other examples of the jacket, but this is comparable to other jackets for Cuala Press books). Book remarkably bright and clean with only a couple of tiny spots to cloth. A few chips to dust jacket. Housed in vibrant red custom box. An VERY RARE AND NEARLY PERFECT COPY of a book of large cultural importance with dazzlingly fresh illustrations.
