Entusiasta di Garibaldi, esaltò l'eroismo dei Mille nell'opera I Mille di Marsala - Scene rivoluzionarie (Milano 1863). In essa rispuntano gli spiriti anticlericali del B., che vede nella Roma sacerdotale il maggiore ostacolo alla completa unificazione d'Italia. Durante la permanenza a Milano scrisse l'altra opera: Il brigantaggio o l'Italia dopo la dittatura diGaribaldi (Milano 1863), nella quale esamina la crisi seguita all'unificazione e l'episodio d'Aspromonte, di cui, al solito, fa ricadere la maggiore responsabilità sul clero per avere avversata la rivoluzione. Tali lavori egli pubblicò con il cognome materno Oddo perché fossero giudicati, come ebbe poi a spiegare, senza che venissero connessi alla sua persona di ex frate. Scritta in epoca coeva, risente dell'ardente patriottismo e degli ideali del periodo, a pregiudizio dello spirito critico. Tuttavia la narrazione delle vicende dell'epica impresa e' dettagliata, vivace, piena d'entusiasmo e di colore e di avvincente lettura. Il libro e' corredato da un'abbondante e piacevole iconografia, che lo inserisce fra quei figurati ital. ottocenteschi ispirati all'ediz. del 1840 dei Promessi Sposi. Opera suddivisa in diciassette capitoli che riassumono fatti e vicende della rivoluzione ed una parte conclusiva comprendente poesie in onore di Garibaldi e dei suoi prodi, da parte di poeti italiani quali De Gubernatis, Eliodoro Lombardis, Concettina Ramondetti Filetti. Solo due presentano qualche lacerazione e mancanza. Monumentale racconto illustrato dell'impresa dei Mille. I fatti sono narrati con precisione e sono riportati ordini e proclami così come arrivavano alle truppe. Riporta tutte le battaglie, le reazioni dell'esercito borbonico; contiene l'elenco dei soldati defunti e delle vittime civili. Ampio resoconto delle azioni diplomatiche intercorse. Il più ampio e minuzioso resoconto delle vicende che decretarono la sconfitta dei Borboni e la nascita dell'Italia unita.
