Scarce British Treatise on Courts Martial O'Dowd, J.C. Practical Hints to Courts Martial Upon Many Matters Usually Coming Under Their Notice. London: William Clowes and Sons, 1882. viii, 160 pp. Octavo (7" x 5"). Original cloth, blind frames to boards, gilt title to front. Moderate dampstaining, corners and spine ends bumped, hinges cracked but secure, rear free endpaper lacking, crack near center of text block. Toning to text, light foxing in a few places. Early owner signatures (of Corporal Scott and Charles C. David) to front pastedown and free endpaper, interior otherwise clean. A solid copy. $125. * Only edition. British military law was substantially revised with the passage of the Army Act in 1881. O'Dowd's handbook summarizes the law as it stood after these reforms. Intended for busy practitioners, it is a "handy" book rather than "an exact or exhaustive treatise." OCLC locates 8 copies worldwide, 4 copies in North America, 1 copy in a law library (Columbia). Not in Sweet & Maxwell.
