He returned to Ireland at the end of the war and tried to raise a body of men to fight with the Nazis on the Russian front. He considered himself to be one of the most important men in Europe after Hitler and Mussolini; he became the Chief of Staff of the IRA, the second Commissioner of the Garda, leader of the Army Comrades Association and then the first leader of Fine Gael.
