Einzige Ausgabe dieses seltenen und bedeutenden Werkes. - Es stammt aus seiner Göttinger Zeit und hat mit dazu beigetragen, Oken bekannt zu machten und nach Jena zu berufen als außerordentlichen Professor für Medizin. "Zunächst hielt ihn sein philosophisches Interesse nicht von gründlichen empirischen Untersuchungen ab, die er in Göttingen zusammen mit Dietrich Georg Kieser über die Keimesentwicklung des Hühnchens und auch über die 'vergleichende Zoologie, Anatomie und Physiologie' (1806-1807) durchführte. Daraus gingen einige bedeutende Ergebnisse und neue Erkenntnisse hervor: er erkannte die Homologie des Dottersacks der Vögel mit dem 'Nabelbläschen' der Säugetiere, den Zwischenkieferknochen am embryonalen Menschenschädel (unabhängig von Goethe, der seinen Befund noch nicht veröffentlicht hatte) und er entwickelte wie dieser die 'Wirbeltheorie des Schädels'" (Jahn, Geschichte der Biologie S. 290). - Stempel auf Titel.
