First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Tall octavo. 192pp. Text in Russian. Illustrated from engravings and half-tone photographs. Nicely bound, with wrappers, into textured black cloth. Wrappers very lightly soiled, one leaf with a short foredge tear unnecessarily tape-repaired on both sides, and one page spread with a very small area of offsetting from something laid in, a bright and remarkably well-preserved, just about fine copy. Ownership stamp and signature of a noted American psychologist on the front fly. A rare 1913 Russian immigrant's guide to the United States and Canada, published by the editor of the Manhattan Russian newspaper *Russkoe slovoe*, or *The Russian Word*, which the author of this volume had edited since its founding three years earlier. The New York Public Library on the paper's importance: "*Russkoe slovo* (later *Novoe russkoe slovo*) was the most widely read Russian newspaper in North America for a century." It was also the first daily Russian newspaper published in the United States. The guide published by the three-year-old newspaper introduces the new arrival to history, politics (including a large halftone photograph of then-President Woodrow Wilson), agriculture, and geography, with wonderful two-page maps of both the United States and Canada, with the place names in Russian. A single-page map of the U.S. shows the distribution of immigrants by state. Fifteen pages toward the end are dedicated to charming advertisements, most for New York City companies, but Philadelphia, Chicago, and the "fertile wheat lands of western Canada" are also represented. Several advertisements are included in the text: M. Bondarevsky, a Russian bookseller at 143 E. Broadway, advertises their wares on p.90, and pp.112-113 are dedicated to a full-spread ad, read vertically, advertising Deutsch Bros. as the only Russian banking office in New York. A rare, fascinating, and remarkably well-preserved Russian immigrant's guide to the United States and Canada, compiled and published by the editor of North America's most influential Russian newspaper.
