En ny, något reviderad upplaga, utgavs av Loccenius 1654 och den första svenska utgåvan översattes av Johan Sylvius och kom ut år 1678. Ericus Olai (död 1486) studerade utomlands och efter att ha bivit teologie doktor i Siena blev han det nystartade Uppsala universitets första professor i teologi. Han skrev sin svenska historia på uppdrag av Karl Knutsson och ärkebiskopen Jöns Bengtsson och avslutade arbetet omkring 1470. Verket kallas vanligen ?Chronica regni Gothorum?, men utgavs med titeln ?Historia svecorum gothorumque?, och det sträcker sig från äldsta tider till 1464. ?Ericus Olais arbete betecknar det första försöket att gifva en genomförd pragmatisk framställning av Sveriges öden med uppspårande av det historiska sammanhanget och de handlande personeras bevekelsegrunder. Om sin egen samtids händelser visar sig Ericus Olai vara ganska väl underrättad och därför har den sista avdelningen i hans historia, som vilar på egna iakttagleser och andras meddelanden, ett ej obetydligt källvärde?
