First Edition. [Historical Mexico City] Two heavily illustrated historical books on Mexico dating from 1945-1946, Mexico en el Tiempo (Mexico in Time), put together by Mexican native Roberto Olavarria, showcases a vast timeline of Mexico's development from the Aztec and Mayan civilization, to Spanish development, to contemporary Mexico City. Mexico en el Tiempo: Fisionomia de una Ciudad. Mexico: Talleres Excelsior, 1945. First Edition. Editor: Olavarria, Roberto. 302 pages. Illustrated paper wrappers. Illustrated with many black and white photographs and drawings of Mexico ranging from Mesoamerica to the mid 20th century. Text in Spanish. The book follows the progression of Mexico from the time of the Aztec empire with photographs and diagrams, to European development and includes blurbs from a couple sentences to a few paragraphs giving each region and building's historical and political context. Mexico en el Tiempo: El Marco de la Capital. Mexico: Talleres Excelsior, 1946. First Edition. Editor: Olavarria, Roberto. 285 pages. Illustrated paper wrappers. Illustrated with many black and white photographs of various post colonial buildings in different districts and boroughs across Mexico City. Text in Spanish. One section is dedicated to the historical district of Santa Cruz Xochitepec following the procession of the Day of the Cross ceremony on the Cerro de Xochitepec where locals have been gathering together every year to bear a 1,100 pound down a hill into church and adorn a new one for it's return up the hill the week following. Index includes: Coyacan, Tlapan, Xochimilco, Milpa Alta, Ixtapalapa, Ixiacalco, Recuerdos de Antano, Villa de Guadalupe, Atzacapotzalco, Tacuba, Los Remidios, Tacubaya, Santa Fe, Cuajimalpa, Desierto de los Leones, Mixcoac, San Angel, Volvamos a Coyocan. Some wear to edges and spine, the second book's binding is loose about 3" from the bottom, but tight otherwise. Foxing to some pages and to wrappers. Pages, text blocks and images are crisp and clear. Overall very good condition. A well researched and detailed encyclopedic account of the foundations of Mexico alongside images of the various cultural differences and developments as seen through regional architecture and customs.
