A small format softback (not issued with a dustwrapper). Foxing to the front and rear of the covers and to the early/late pages of the book. Adverts for Roe's Meals to the verso of the front cover…for Indigestion, Biliousness, Constipation or Piles, Edwards Dessicated Soups to the verso of the half-title, John Clapp's wholemeal bread, rosemary cakes and charcoal biscuits, Chollet & Co's dried vegetables & herbs for soups etc, Brown & Polson's Corn Flour (at the end of the book). Josiah Oldfield was an English lawyer, physician, activist, and writer. He promoted his own variant of fruitarianism, which was virtually indistinguishable from lacto-ovo vegetarianism. Oldfield was a prolific writer of popular books on dietary and health topics. Oldfield was a close friend of Gandhi where they had a shared interest in - not to say passion for - vegetarianism. Both were members of the London Vegetarian Society and Oldfield exercised considerable influence over Gandhi. For a time Gandhi and Oldfield shared an apartment, in Bayswater, hosting parties where guests were served lentil soup, boiled rice and large raisins. On other evenings they sallied together into the world, "lecturing at clubs and any other public meetings where we could obtain a hearing for our gospel of peace and health". NB: The first edition status of this rare booklet can be gleaned from the "Advantages for Subscribers for 1893" on the last page of text. Oldfield was a pioneer of dietary reform, whose many projects included a vegetarian hospital, a fruitarian colony, and an educational program in dietetics. Quite scarce in first edition.
