Sie handelt vom damals weltberühmten Rag Fair - einem Altkleidermarkt, dessen Handelsrouten sich über Kontinente erstreckten. Hier kamen Migranten und Einheimische in Kontakt, stritten über jüdische und irische Klischees, gingen Klientelbeziehungen ein und schmiedeten politische Allianzen. Ethnizität und Religion spielte in vielen dieser Prozesse eine wichtige Rolle. Zugleich bot der Markt aber gute Gründe, ethnische Grenzen zu missachten und sich über sie hinweg sozial zu formieren. Ole Münch knüpft seine Beobachtungen an Debatten aus der Geschichtswissenschaft, Soziologie und Ethnologie. Seine Studie gibt einen Einblick in kaum erforschte Bereiche der Wirtschafts-, Politik- und Rechtsgeschichte einer schillernden Metropole, deren soziales Leben der Autor konsequent »von unten« betrachtet.
