First printing. Posthumous book publication of these three character sketches of African Americans on a Maryland plantation. These were originally published in the Atlantic Monthly under the pen name of Olive A. Wadsworth (the initials O.A.W. stood for 'only a woman.') Includes a preface by the author's husband, William B. Dana. Illustrated with many full page plates, including a frontispiece with a tissue guard, and smaller vignettes by E. W. Kemble (who is perhaps best known for his illustrations in some of Mark Twain's works) An appealing small volume and while the characterization is stereotypical, at least the emphasis is on their goodness and just their simplicity. Laid in is a small promotional brochure for the works of Whittier. Top edge gilt. 147 pp. Near fine in light blue cloth with darker blue lettering and illustration on front cover, gilt lettering on spine. Uncommon in this condition.
