According to the author, the chairperson of Garvey Incorporated in Wichita Kansas, if Americans forget the basic law of economics and society - Produce or Starve - America will never grow up. This book is a vivid description of where we have been heading since 1900, a keen criticism of what has gone wrong, a stern but loving prescription for how to "grow up" to our American ideals. Permissive parents, flower children, the welfare state, teachers, the nuts and bolts of our working economy- these are all pieces of the puzzle the author fits together to make a telling portrait of America's whole self- her past, present, and possible future as a nation of responsible, free individuals. A clean very presentable copy.

A most interesting biography.

From dust jacket: All realist when assessing a situation -- a man of vision when it came to plotting his course of action. This was Ray Hugh Garvey, liberal arts student at Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas, switching to law for a tuition advantage -- changing from legal work in Colby to real estate in Thomas County because sales were more profitable than drawing up the papers -- making land work for him by producing a crop while he was looking for a buyer. These early years set the pattern for Ray Garvey's many successes in farming; in building; in oil drilling and exploration; and most important of all, in a great chain of grain elevators from Kansas into Colorado and as far away as North Dakota. "Castles of the Plains," he called them but citadels of defense they really were when production outstripped distribution under the New Deal's regimented economy and the basic law of supply and demand was ignored. That his varied operations were so successful would seem to be a contradiction of Ray Garvey's economic convictions, for he is shown to be opposed to government controls, to retired acreage, to price supports. He tolerated the subsidy set up, but the biographer quotes him as saying, "We just operate under the program, we don't set it." How Ray Garvey operated under the program is an illuminating case history for students of economics, a veritable field trip for social historians. But this biography is much, much more than a textbook supplement. It has even greater significance as the portrait of a complex man, whose personal life and business accomplishments are a challenge and an inspiration to readers of all ages.
