Bekanntlich steht das künstlerische Schaffen ständig in einem dialektischen Verhältnis sowohl zur Politik wie auch zur Geschichte der Kultur, und beide bedeuten für die Kunst Impuls und Widerstand zugleich. Gleichwohl geschieht es manchmal, daß es dem Kunstschaffen in seinem unaufhaltsamen Drang gelingt, das Zufällige im Alltäglichen hinter sich zu lassen und aufdiese Weise die Geburt des sogenannten »Kunstwerks« herbeizuführen. In diesen Ausnahmefällen also, bei denen sich das Kunstwerk jedes unmittelbaren historischen und politischen Sinngehalts entledigt und in die Sphäre universaler Gültigkeit eintritt, wird es fortan Kulturgut nicht einer bestimmten Epoche oder eines besonderen Volkes, sondern Wert und Bezugspunkt für den menschlichen Geist und seine Entwicklung schlechthin. Die »Pferde von San Marco« bilden gewiß eines deranregendsten Beispiele dafür, wie ein »Kunstwerk« Ausdruck seiner Zeit ist und zugleich überzeitlichen Charakter von universaler künstlerischer Bedeutung hat und damit Allgemeingut geworden ist. Das wech-selvolle Schicksal der Skulpturengruppe steht als Symbol für erlittenes und mühevolles Nomadentum. Einmal mehr kommt damit zum Ausdruck, daß die Begrenzung eines Kunstwerks nicht notwendig übereinstimmt mit den Grenzen der Örtlichkeit, die zu seiner Beherbergung ausersehen ist, in diesem Fall mit den Grenzen Venedigs. Die Grenzen werden vielmehr von dem Kunstwerk selbst gezogen, das aufgrund der in ihm enthaltenen Werte Eingang in die Kulturgeschichte gefunden hat. Daß unser Land die »Pferde von San Marco« zu seinen reichen Kunstschätzen zählen kann, muß uns übrigens ebenso zum Nachdenken veranlassen wie auch für unsere Aufgaben in Denkmalschutz und Denkmalpflege stimulieren. Denn die Gesuche, die Reichtümer unserer Geschichte und Kunst aus unmittelbarer Nähe kennenlernen und bewundern zu dürfen, die aus aller Welt an uns gerichtet werden, nehmen einen beträchtlichen Umfang an.
