SEPHARDIC CULTURE IN AMSTERDAM: THE WORKS OF SELOMOH DE OLIVEYRA (1633-1708). 12mos. [149 x 90 mm]. Bound in plain modern buckram with gilt titles on spine. Paper a little browned throughout; a few corners lost without loss of text; and with a handful of early Hebrew annotations. Remarkable survival of a Sammelband of 10 works (under 8 titles) authored by "the preeminent and omnipresent Hebrew poet of Jewish Amsterdam", Selomoh de Oliveyra (1633-1708). Found en bloc, the items showcase the rich intellectual life of Dutch Jews in the late 17th century, including texts on poetry composition, philology, and even a beginner's guide to Portuguese likely intended for newly-arrived Ashkenazim. Born around 1633 in Amsterdam as the son of fugitive Marranos, Oliveyra became a rabbi before producing a sizeable output of both secular and religious works in print most of which are found in the present Sammelband. His first dated work is the mixture of epic poetry and prose Ayelet Ahavim ['A Loving Doe'], printed in 1665; in 1666 he recognized along with the majority of the Sephardic community Shabtai Zwi as a messiah, and we note a pause in his printing activity until the early 1680s. "During the greater part of his life - the latter half of the seventeenth century - ?Oliveyra was the preeminent and omnipresent Hebrew poet of Jewish Amsterdam. It is true that most scholars of that time occasionally wrote poetry (whether in Latin or Hebrew), but ?Oliveyra had a genuine poetic ambition which went beyond the mere ceremonial." (van der Heide). Albert van der Heide's excellent article ("Poetry in the Margin: The Literary Career of Haham Selomoh d'Oliveyra (1633-1708)", Studia Rosenthaliana Vol. 40, pp. 139-146) gives a list of 11 known published works by Oliveyra, of which 9 are found in the present volume. Printed for a community which numbered perhaps 10,000 at its peak in the late 17th century, most of these items prove to be rare in census. Perhaps most intriguing, and little-studied as far as we have traced, is the Ilan she-'anafav merubin / Vocabulario da lingua Portuguesa, explicado em Hebraico printed in 1682/3. Initially invited and given financial support by the resident Sephardim, by 1674 Ashkenazim from Germany and Central Europe far outnumbered their co-religionists (ca. 5,000 vs 2,500) but spoke only Yiddish. Oliveyra's guide thus seems to have been aimed at fostering relations between the two groups by teaching the Ashkenazi arrivals the lingua franca of the Sephardim. The constituent titles are: 1. Yad lason = Libro da gramatica hebrayca & chaldayca. Estilo breve & facil. [Amsterdam]: Em casa de David Tartas, por Semuel Teyxeiyra, 5449 [i.e. 1688]. [11], 4-44, [11], 56-65, [3], 69-71, [11] p; signed *-*4, A-I4, K, L-L4. 1a. [including a separate title-page for:] Gramatica Breve da Lingua Chaldaica. Entrada para este Idioma, & principios de suas Regras 'Chaldaic' was the contemporary term for the language used for the Books of Daniel and Ezra in the Hebrew Bible; today it is more accurately called 'Aramaic'. OCLC shows just five copies worldwide, all in Europe. * Amzalak, 13 & 14; Barbosa, III, p. 674; Fürst, III, p. 46, describing Part II only; IB C88319 y C109309; Heller, I, p. 1129; Innocencio, VII, S, 157; Kayserling, p. 80; Palau, 200887; Rodríguez de Castro, p. 592 y 593; Roet, II, p. 990; Steinschneider, Bodleiana, 6964.8; Steinschneider, Handbuch, 1476. 2.
