Watson Jr., gives a first-person account of Mission No. 16, the flight of the B-29 Bockscar on August 9, 1945, written by the man who flew as its third pilot. The narrative draws on a diary Olivi kept against orders and follows the secret training that led up to the mission and the delivery of "Fat Man," the plutonium bomb. It retraces the flight in detail. The bomb had to be aimed by sight rather than by radar, and the bombardier could not see the primary target on three bomb runs before the aircraft turned toward Nagasaki. Olivi also describes the blinding light of the detonation as seen from the cockpit. His account of the mission's difficulties avoids the blame traded among other crew members. Inscribed by Author.…
