Light shelf wear to tips, corners, and edges of the book and jacket, page edges darkened / dusty From the flap: "Take twelve Irish literary masters, among them James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, Sean O'Casey, Elizabeth Bowen, and Mary Lavin, and note from pastiches of their works how food, all aspects of it, appears in their pages. With insight, humor, and more than a little ingenuity then create recipes for the dishes, situating them as Veronica Jane O'Mara and Fionnuala O'Reilly have - with tasty allusions to the works - and you partake of a feast. From a sampling of Finnegan's Wake, we learn of "careful teacakes," the recipe for yeasty rounds further instructing us not to drop butter on our shirts and not to eat too many! We make white scones and brown scones as well, as Sean O'Casey would have liked them, and from Elizabeth Bowen's The Last September comes the inspiration and recipe for Sink-the-Bismarck Chocolate Cake, a black-out combination to end all chocolate cakes. There are recipes for porridge and tarts and kedgeree and a fool, and so much more." Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The four Middle English sermons from British Library, MS Harley 2268, for the occasions of the Annunciation/Passion Sunday, the Feast of St Mary Magdalene, a Procession, and a Dedication of an Altar to St Anne are edited here for the first time. They form an integrated group, sharing a consistency in content, a similarity of style, and a uniformity of outlook. Although clearly the work of a very scholarly preacher and replete with authorities both biblical and patristic, the tone adopted can also be a populist one, while the preacher makes use of images and allegories more often found in obviously literary works. Prepared at the peak of the Lollard threat and at the height of the turmoil of the Schism, the sermons provide an important example of outspoken and political preaching. Moreover, there is probably a wider range of implicit and explicit contextual information for the Harley 2268 texts than for any other similar set of sermons. This evidence gives strong support to the argument that the sermons were associated with the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary in York, specifically the abbot, Thomas Spofford, and were designed for different venues in York in the early decades of the fifteenth century. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Clare, Janet and Veronica O'Mara, editors. Literature, readers and dialogue : essays by and in reply to Douglas Jefferson. First edition. Dublin: University College Dublin Press, 2006. Hardback, Fine, in unclipped dustjacket in protective ransparent wrapper. Maroon cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding strong and tight. Orange endpapers. Frontispiece b/w portrait photograph. xiv, 226pp., contents clean and bright. This collection of essays by Douglas Jefferson from various periods of his distinguished career and by fellow academics writing in response to his work represents a novel dialogic form of literary criticism. In his essays ranging from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" to the "Canon", Jefferson is always stimulating and engaging, while offering nuanced and informed readings of his chosen texts. Replying to Jefferson's work, contemporary critics have variously extended his ideas, disclosing new ways of reading texts in the light of current debate and more theoretical developments, or have adopted a more discursive strategy in using ideas derived from Jefferson's essays to provoke further explorations. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. All images are of the actual book for sale - no stock images are ever used. Thank you for looking at this listing.
