Three case studies of UK nuclear power station planning, 6. Siting reactors in the US, 7. Demographic characteristics of nuclear power station sites in the UK and US, 8. Optimal siting from a public perspective, 9. Summary, conclusions and recommendations, Bibliography, Index. ***'Nuclear power is now regarded as essential to survival in the twenty-first century. But the safety of nuclear power stations is a highly controversial topic, and where they will be sited is a most vital question. In this independent critique, based on four years of research, Stan Openshaw demonstrates that, whilst major reactor accidents are expected to be rare events, the nuclear industry cannot guarantee that accidents affecting large numbers of people will not occur. Current conditional assurances of safety exclude the possibility of terrorist attacks, sabotage and human error. Nuclear safety is a matter of faith.' (Quotes taken from the back cover ***On 26 April 1986, the no. 4 reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located near Pripyat, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union (now Ukraine), exploded. With dozens of direct casualties, it is one of only two nuclear energy accidents rated at the maximum severity on the International Nuclear Event Scale.) ***A first printing of the true first edition of this book - published as a paperback original. All editions of this book are uncommon. Interestingly, the book was published in the same year as the Chernobyl disaster! ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. The cover photomontage of a typically rural English scene of trees and farmland contrasted with the mushroom cloud of a nuclear explosion on the horizon is very striking and designed to capture the subject of this publication. In the book's Introduction, there is a reference to the Domesday survey of 900 years ago. It continues thus: if Britain were to be conquered again, this time with nuclear weapons, what would be the condition of its land, how many people might be left living, and what would the conquerors find? These are the questions this new 'doomsday' book sets out to answer. It takes a scientific approach and is filled with maps, tables, charts etc - see example images. Condition - in a very sound state. Mild tanning and slightest of edgewear. As far as can be seen, only one paragraph (on Soviet targeting staff) has a red ink line alongside it. pp. vi, 296. 8vo. Please note that, depending on destination, we may request a payment to cover any extra shipping & postage charges. Proceeds to Amnesty International. Abe2549. Home Office Calculations of the Effects of Attack, 10. Civil Defence and its Effectiveness, Appendices, Notes, Index. ***'It is almost nine hundred years since "Domesday". If Britain were to be conquered again, this time with nuclear weapons, what would be the conditions of its land, how many people might be left living, and what would the conquerors find? These are the questions this new "doomsday" book sets out to answer. It is the first full, public account of the effects of a nuclear attack on Britain. The authors describe the types and numbers of Soviet nuclear weapons and the kinds of targets - military, industrial, civilian - against which the weapons might be directed. They construct a series of patterns of attack (including a retaliatory strike by Russia after most of their weapons have been destroyed) and show the consequences of each in death, injury and damage. Computer programs developed especially for this book allow them to predict the effects in detail for every town and county. ***"Doomsday" is a work of science in that all assumptions, methods and sources are full and explicit. But it is also controversial: its findings, for example, are radically at odds with official Home Office predictions. ***"Doomsday" exposes facts that have hitherto been unavailable, possibly suppressed. Discussion of the real issues of nuclear defence and warfare simply isn't possible without them.' (Quotes taken from the back cover) ***A second printing of the true first edition of this book - published as a paperback original. All editions of this book are scarce. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 468 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The 1990s have seen some remarkable changes in geographical information (GI) provision and computer technology that have impacted on many of the activities that constitute planning in all its different forms. However, relatively few texts in the field of geographical information systems (GIS) and planning have been published since Henk Scholten and John Stillwell edited Geographical Information Systems for Urban and Regional Planning in 1990. This volume seeks to redress the balance by showing how GI of various types is being used in urban, physical, environmental, socio-economic and business planning contexts at local, regional and national scales with the assistance of GIS and modelling methods, and how the uses of GI and GI technologies have evolved over the last decade. During this period, a number of meetings took place in Europe in different locations organised initially by European Geographical Information Systems (EGIS, 1990- 94) and more recently by the Joint European Conference and Exhibition (JEC) on Geographical Information (1995-97). These meetings brought together members of the GI community from across the world to discuss GI research and GIS applications. One of the Special Interest Groups associated with the JEC gatherings was that on 'Geographical Information and Planning' and several of the contributions in this book have their origins in papers presented to the group's meetings.
