  • Seller image for BRITISH ARTISTS AT WORK (AMANDA ELIASCH, GEMMA DE CRUZ FRANCA SOZZANI, HARTENSTEIN-SAATCHI, MARTIN MALONEY) for sale by CivicoNet, Libreria Virtuale

Brossura. Condition: come nuovo. Dust Jacket Condition: ottimo. prima edizione. Offering unique insight into the world of contemporary art, this book looks at four generations of artists, from the established to the newly emerged. Photographs of each of the artists, taken by Amanda Eliasch during 2002 in the artists' studios, are set alongside examples of their work. The text by Gemma de Cruz provides a brief overview of who the artists are, what they do and how their work and ideas fit into the art world at this time. This book draws attention to a particular selection of artists who together form a strong idea of what is happening now in contemporary art in London, featuring artists who are influential alongside those they have influenced. I suppose I became interested in art about ten years ago when I met Charles Saatchi at the Amanpuri Hotel in Thailand. I was sitting by the swimming pool and he was sitting with the film director David Puttnam. He asked me where I lived and I told him in Chester Square. "Well, introduce me to your husband because we need clever young people like him." So we became friends, but not within the art world. Johan was his "cleaner," as he called him, he'd clean up his mess and he cleaned up the Saatchi deal between the old and new companies. I really appreciated Charles's help recently as he assisted me with my photographic shows of nudes. The last one he came to he said, "Oh, definitely, definitely commercial, stick to 1930s Paris." I had been working with Martin Maloney and doing some colour photographs, and Martin said, "Keep on with them." Charles said, "If you keep on with them you'd better go into magazines." So I went to New York and took my book round and I got a call back from Visionaire. I then telephoned Katy Barker who was the only photographic agent I knew and asked her advice. She told me that I couldn't show nudes and that I should do some fashion photographs. So I was introduced to a girl named Rushka Bergman who helped me take the correct photographs for my book. I showed them to the photographer Michel Comte, who took me to Italian Vogue. I then did one or two jobs for Franca, including the Kartell Catalogue, which many photographers did. It showed artists in their chairs. She liked the pictures and suggested I do a book on artists in their studios. I asked for a writer, and Martin suggested Gemma de Cruz, and we drew up a list together. The list in the book is quite varied: It is Young British Artists and a few of the Establishment who actually made the young artists or helped to make them. I liked the older guys because I think as a cu.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Adelaide, Hussey & Gillingham Limited, Printers [for the Author], 1917. Octavo, 112 pages. Original wrappers (with the title page details repeated within a border on the front cover) slightly rubbed, creased and marked, with minimal wear to the head of the spine; very light cockling to the front bottom corner throughout; overall, an excellent copy. 'For private circulation'. Provenance: Frederick (Fred) Johns (1868-1932), journalist and biographer, with his signature in pencil at the head of the front cover. In '1906 Johns compiled and published a biographical dictionary that was to become a national institution, "Johns's Notable Australians". Three features characterized this and later editions: painstaking accuracy, information obtained directly from the individuals concerned, and apolitical, factual entries with no comment or eulogy. It was republished in 1908 and in 1912-14 appeared as "Fred Johns's Annual". The series revived in 1922 as 'Who's Who in the Commonwealth of Australia' and in 1927 as "Who's Who in Australia"' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
