Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Large 8vo. 1/3 p. on bifolium. With autograph address. To Félix Baciocchi, brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, inviting him to a meeting later that day: "Se Ella può passare da me verso l'ora dopo mezzo giorno avrei da comunicarle una cosa. Sono con stima perfetta, C. Carl(o) Oppizzoni". - Born in Ajacco to an impoverished noble Corsican family, Baciocchi joined the French army in 1778, rising to the rank of captain in 1794. In 1797, he married Elisa Maria Bonaparte in Marseilles, which ensured his meteoric rise on the social ladder until 1814, when Elisa was forced to abdicate as Grand Duchess of Tuscany and the couple fled. While Elisa died in 1820 in Trieste, Felix was eventually allowed to return to their palace in Bologna. - Carlo Opizzoni was among the twelve so-called black cardinals who refused to attend the wedding of Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie-Louise of Austria on 2 April 1810, which was punished with their removal from office and the sequestration of their property. Opizzoni was imprisoned in Vincennes and could only return to Bologna in 1815. His tenure as archbishop of Bologna of 52 years is the longest in the history of the archdiocese. - The year "1834" was added in different ink, perhaps by another hand. With a tear to the blank leaf from breaking the seal. Minimal foxing. - From the collection of Eduard Fischer von Röslerstamm (1848-1915).
