This book analyzes the works of popular American authors from the 19th century, including Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Washington Irving, to show how the American literary landscape of the time reflected the social, political, and cultural tensions of the era. The author examines the ways in which these writers grappled with issues of national identity, slavery, and the role of women in society, capturing the complexities and contradictions of a rapidly changing nation. Through insightful analysis of individual works and their historical context, the book provides a nuanced understanding of the formative period of American literature and its lasting impact on the nation's cultural identity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. With a signed note from the author affixed to the front pastedown, reading in full: "Norma: I have learned that my small book on the founding of the Audubon movement is still in print but---the price has been raised to $49.95. Absurd! Herein enclosed for your library is a slightly used copy. You many now and then find it useful a reference. Oliver Orr." One of the author's own copies then, passed along. Orr was a specialist in American History at the Library of Congress. With a bookplate reading "From the Library of Bill & Norma Siebenheller" at the opposite corner of the pastedown. The Siebenheller's were bird enthusiasts who wrote a longtime column called "Footnotes on Nature" first for the State Island Advance then the Translyvania Times. Norma Siebenheller also wrote articles for Birders Digest. A biography of T. Gilbert Pearson, an important figure in early bird conservation. He was the first president of the North Carolina Audubon Society and a founding member (the original secretary) of the National Audubon Society. He was also an all-around interesting story, described for instance as "the member of the Boone and Crockett Club with the smallest bank account." He grew up in a cabin in the woods of Florida where he began to hunt and collect birds; he traded his collection of birds for college tuition and afterward devoted himself to conservation, becoming the first chair of biology and geology at what's now UNC-Greensboro. After William Dutcher died, Pearson followed as the second president of the National Audubon Society, a post he held for fourteen years. A very good copy on account of foxing to text block edges, otherwise very clean. In a very good jacket with a few short tears and nicks and light toning to spine. Uncommon signed in any form.
