Nineteenth-century account of Robert McClure's expedition of the Northwest Passage, the sea route to the Pacific Ocean through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America. Illustrated with eight plates of full-page reproductions. McClure (18071873) was an Irish explorer, who was the first to transit the Northwest Passage by boat and sledge, and the first to circumnavigate the Americas in 1854. The book is based on Johann Gottlieb Kutzner's (18221872) popular,1861 book of similar title, MacClure's Entdeckung der nordwestlichen Durchfahrt in den Jahren 1850 bis 1854. nebst einem Blick aus die fru?heren Entdeckungsreifen nach dem hohen Norden, sowie aus die no?rdliche Polarwelt im Allgemeinen (MacClure's Discovery of the Northwest Passage in the Years 185054, along with a View of the Early Discoveries to the far North, as well as to the Northern Polar Region in General). Using other source texts as well, the author also gives an overview of earlier and later expeditions to the areas, besides giving account of McClure's Arctic expedition. .
