Weitere Studien in Deutschland, v. a. in Berlin. 1843 Vikar in Diegten, 1845-67 Pfarrer in Waldenburg, 1867-84 an der Basler Strafanstalt Schellenmätteli und ab 1884 in Biel-Benken. O. wurde durch die Gedichtsammlung "Sechzig Kreuz- und Trostlieder" (1856) als Lyriker bekannt. Sein "Liederbuch" (1875) enthält 400 Natur-, Liebes- und Alltagsgedichte aus den Jahren 1842-74. Viele von O.s "Liedern" wurden vertont und gehörten zum Allgemeingut der deutschsprachigen Gesangvereine des 19. Jh. Am bekanntesten wurde "Das weisse Kreuz im roten Feld" in der Vertonung von Carl Attenhoferğ (HLS).
