An uncommon book in a handsome, period binding. We don't know the stories, but the plates are good fun.

Édition originale de la traduction d'Alphonse Cerfbeer de Medelsheim, de ce délicieux recueil de contes traduits par Alphonse Cerfberr de Medelsheim (1817-1883), issu de l'œuvre de l'écrivain et compilateur allemand Johann Karl August Musäus (1735-1787). Ces contes sont extraits de ce qui est considéré comme son chef-d'œuvre : Volksmärchen der Deutschen, publié pour la première fois entre 1782 et 1786. Cette édition réunit dix contes ou légendes sélectionnés parmi les cinq volumes de l'édition allemande, incluant des œuvres emblématiques telles que : Rübezahl, Damon-Amor, La Nouvelle Matrone d'Éphèse, Le Chercheur de trésors, Ondine et Melechsala. L'illustration compte 136 gravures sur bois dans le texte et à pleine page (et non 300 comme indiqué sur le titre), réalisées d'après les dessins des plus grands artistes allemands de l'époque, parmi lesquels : Adrian Ludwig Richter (1804-1884), Georg Osterwald, et Adolf Schrödter. Exemplaire de second état, avec, dans le tome 2, les deux premiers et les deux derniers feuillets réimprimés : la mention d'imprimeur au verso du feuillet de faux-titre est : « Paris. — Imprimerie Schneider, rue d'Erfurth, 1. » ; la vignette de titre est différente (reprise de l'in-texte de la page 19) ; les pages 137 à 140 ne sont pas illustrées ; la table est imprimée page 140.
