This book delves into the fascinating world of Terra Sigillata, the red-glazed pottery commonly known as Samian ware, prevalent during the Roman Empire. The author meticulously examines the variations in form, decoration, and potter's marks, revealing their significance as chronological indicators of this historical period. Emerging from the artistic landscape of the late Roman Republic and early Empire, Terra Sigillata drew inspiration from Hellenistic art forms, particularly the relief pottery of Boeotia and Pergamum. This book traces the evolution of Terra Sigillata production from its Italian origins, specifically the renowned Arretine ware, to its widespread manufacture in Roman provinces like Gaul and Germany. The author sheds light on the intricate details of pottery techniques, design motifs, and regional variations, offering invaluable insights into the dating and distribution of these ceramics. By analyzing pottery finds from various archaeological sites, the book reconstructs the trade routes and economic networks that facilitated the dissemination of Terra Sigillata throughout the Roman world. Ultimately, this book underscores the profound connection between archaeological discoveries and historical understanding, demonstrating how the study of Terra Sigillata enriches our knowledge of Roman culture, trade, and chronology. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
