The Lecompton Constitution was a pro-slavery state constitution drafted in Lecompton, Kansas, in 1857. It was a key event in the lead-up to the Civil War, further exacerbating tensions between the North and South over the issue of slavery. The constitution was ultimately rejected by Kansas voters, highlighting the deep divisions within the territory and the nation.…
