[Otsu n.d. ca. 1900, n.p.]. Single sheet painting, 25 x 71 cm., very good, hand-painted on thin hand-made Washi paper, polychrome color, a few old mends on the verso, else clean, good solid color, unsigned as usual. OBSCURE ORIGINAL ART OTSU-E" literally means "Pictures of Otsu city," located close to Kyoto. * Otsu-e were first painted in the early Edo Period [ca.1604] in Otsu City, Otani, Oiwake district. By and large these lovely folk-paintings were executed by unknown artists, unsigned and were sold as souvenirs to travelers along the Old Tokaido Highway, running along the East coast of Japan. * In the early 17th century, Otsu-e were first sold as religious paintings of Buddha to be hung in the homes of the common people, used as objects of worship. Other subjects became gradually popular such as Bijin [Japanese beauties], devils, pictures of the "Floating World' [Ukiyo-e], and Buddhist deities, animals of the twelve zodiac, devils and Samurai warriors. * Our example is of a famous Samurai warrior, likely taken from an historical legend. Because these works lacked text it was not possible to know just who the work represented, most likely during that time, most subjects were know to the people. Regardless, this Samurai is very energetic and a colorful representation of a famous [at that time] 13th or 14th century Japanese heroic figure. * Painted on three sheets of hand-made Washi paper, glued into one large sheet as was typical of the time, ready for framing and display. * CONDITION: The work is in fairly good condition, being painted on somewhat rough but natural hand-made Washi paper. There are a few old mended worm holes and places where the paper was very thin that were mended with other Washi paper from the back side. This does not greatly detract, given its age and otherwise lovely and powerful colors. * REFERENCE: The below goggle hit represents a good number of examples: ource=univ&sa=X&ei=bE-gUPa-MYL2iwLQl4DgDg&ved=0CDwQsAQ&biw=8 19&bih=470 Page three from above show a few examples of warriors. *****.
