Piper belongs to the small but important coterie of German scholars who were unalterably opposed to the Hitler regime. He took an active part in the German Church conflict when the Nazis came to power in 1933; and, as a result of a course of lectures on Church and State in which he boldly affirmed the rights of the Church, he was deprived of his chair in the University of Minster-in-Westphalia and had to leave Germany. In 1937 he was invited to become guest professor at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he finished his career."
