In den gut zwei Jahrzehnten, während denen er mit Haller mehr als 900 Briefe wechselte, hat er sich bei ihm immer wieder über die schlechte Handschrift [Hallers] beklagt. Er verglich sie mit gewissen Insekten, die er jahrelang unter dem Mikroskop beobachtet hatte (11. März 1760). Bonnets berühmte Forschungsobjekte waren Blattläuse! [.] Bonnet stand mit seinem Problem keineswegs alleine da. So international und vielsprachig wie Hallers Korrespondenz waren auch die Klagen über seine Handschrift. [.] Dass sich trotzdem seit mehr als zwei Jahrhunderten immer wieder neue Forschergenerationen um den gewaltigen Haller-Briefkorpus bemühen, spricht für dessen ausserordentliche wissenschafts- und kulturhistorische Bedeutung."
