First collected edition, first printing. This Hurst and Blackett edition collects three fantasy novellas, "The Seventh Dream," "The Doctor's Secret" and "The Turkish Baths." "The Seventh Dream" was first published as a book by F. V. White & Co. in 1888. A man is hypnotized and sent into a dream world. The dreams "describe a city of the future inhabited by people who only speak the truth. Perfect health. Simple lives." - Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Additions. "The Doctor's Secret" and "The Mystery of a Turkish Bath" were first published as separate books in 1890 and 1888 respectively by F. V. White & Co. Mrs. Humphreys's considerable output of romantic fiction mainly targeted female library subscribers. In his foreword to Her RECOLLECTIONS OF A LITERARY LIFE (1936) Philip Gibbs described Humphreys as "a born storyteller." In later life she became a keen follower of Madame Blavatsky (1831-1891) and ardently devoted to the tenets of Theosophy. See Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 95. A very good copy. First edition. "Despite titles like 'In the Vaults,' 'The Spectre,' and 'Haunted,' the stories in VIGNETTES are not supernatural. Instead, they are sentimental Victorian women's fiction that often incorporate sensationalist and Gothic elements, such as accidental murders, revelations involving characters' true identities, and supposedly haunted, abandoned estates. A number of the stories feature not only orphans who, rather than dying alone on the streets of London, end up secure and well loved, but also men and women who ultimately repent of past cruel deeds they have perpetrated. Given that many of the stories take place on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and have redemptive endings, the author probably originally wrote these pieces for publication in Victorian Christmas annuals. The best of the tales is 'Haunted,' in which Ruiz, an orphan from Spain, comes to live with his uncle's family in England. Believing he has accidentally killed one of his cousins, Ruiz flees his new home and seeks shelter inside decaying Chalford Hall with the last surviving member of the notorious Chalford family, an elderly astrologer who educates Ruiz in hopes of having the boy finish a scholarly treatise he has been working on in isolation for decades" (Boyd White). Erstausgabe. - Otto Tschumi (1904-1985) wuchs in einfachen Verhältnissen in der Stadt Bern auf und besuchte dort die obligatorischen Schulen. Die Ausbildung zum Schriftenmaler und zum Lithograf brach er ab. Trotzdem konnte er seinen Lebensunterhalt als Grafiker verdienen. Autodidaktisch begann er in den 1920er-Jahren seinen Stil als Maler zu entwickeln. Er heiratete 1933 die Tänzerin Beatrice Gutekunst, mit der er bis zu seinem Lebensende zusammen blieb. Von 1936 bis 1940 lebte er in Paris. Unter dem Einfluss von Max Ernst, Hans Arp und anderen Surrealisten fand er in dieser Zeit zu seiner eigenen Formensprache.1946 konnte er zum ersten Mal in der Kunsthalle Bern ausstellen. Danach wurde alle paar Jahre eine grosse Einzelausstellung in der Schweiz seinem Werk gewidmet. International wurde er in den 1950er Jahren und spätestens 1960 mit seinem Beitrag zur Biennale di Venezia bekannt.
