[Comics][Western Americana] Anomalous comic "Cody of the Pony Express #1" with wrappers for "Female Outlaws". New York: Fox Features, ca. 1951. Illustrated in color throughout. Original stapled pictorial wraps. 4to (10.25" x 7"). A curious and rare anomalous printing from Fox Syndicate in which the comic interior (Cody of the Pony Express) does not match the wrappers (Women Outlaws). Lacking issue number on the cover, and no publication date or copyright notice. This issue is sometimes referred to as "Women Outlaws #0". The first Cody story starts on page 2, but still comprises a full standard 36-page comic. This anomaly illustrates how mid-century comic publishers, especially smaller ones like Fox, sometimes recycled or rebranded content to meet publishing schedules or redirect stock. The first issue of Cody of the Pony Express, a short-lived Western series from Fox Feature Syndicate, dramatizes the exploits of a youthful William "Buffalo Bill" Cody during his fabled tenure as a Pony Express rider. Released at the height of the postwar boom in Western popular culture, the comic positions Cody as a frontier hero navigating sabotage, frontier violence, and betrayal. As with other Fox titles of the period, Cody blends action with sentimentality and features a mix of standalone stories and continuing characters. This first issue is especially notable for it's covers, which were originally used for another Western themed Fox comic "Women Outlaws" Issue no. 7. The comic includes five story segments: "Wagons of Death", in which Cody discovers a devastated wagon train and must avenge his dying friend; "Powdersmoke Payoff", in which Cody's efforts to secure a freight contract are disrupted by hired guns; "Sleepy Time Six-Shooters", a tale highlighting the physical toll of postal duty on the prairie; "Jim Coulter's Race for Life", involving a desperate dash through Indigenous territory; and the two-page prose narrative "Family Feud." Comic exhibits wear and discoloration to wrappers, with some chipping to spine. Interior with two small ink mark to margins of page 1, otherwise clean and complete with minimal wear. Overall good to very good condition. This issue with anomalous wrappers is valuable not just for its rarity, but also as a material example of the fluid and sometimes rushed publishing practices of Golden Age comic producers.

[Women's History][Comics][Western Americana] Fox Features comic series Women Outlaws, published 1948 to 1949, dramatizes female criminal figures in Western and frontier settings during the postwar period when American popular culture increasingly explored shifting gender roles. Stories centered on armed bandits, stagecoach robbers, and frontier criminals portray women occupying roles traditionally reserved for male outlaws, situating the series within broader mid twentieth century cultural debates over women's independence and authority following World War II. Fox Features. Women Outlaws. New York: Fox Features, 1948-1949. Issues No. 5 and No. 7. First printings. Color illustrated comic books in original pictorial stapled wrappers. [1] Women Outlaws No. 5. New York: Fox Features, 1948. Stories include Roarin' Fanny Stuart plotting a riverboat robbery, an illustrated historical feature on Montezuma, and a narrative about Naomi Shanes riding with an outlaw gang led by Devereaux. [2] Women Outlaws No. 7. New York: Fox Features, July 1949. Lead story "Josie Freeman The Western Wildcat" follows an Arizona outlaw seeking revenge for her father's murder. Additional stories include a prose account of a stagecoach robbery gang led by Lulu Jane and a comic feature on "Cactus Kate Queen of the Kidnappers." Illustration style reflects conventions of Golden Age crime and Western comics including bold linework, bright colors, and action centered compositions of gunfights and mounted pursuits. Stories draw inspiration from historical female outlaws such as Belle Starr and Pearl Hart while adapting these figures into sensationalized mid twentieth century crime narratives. Wrappers worn with chipping, creases, and edge tears. Interiors toned but complete and legible. Good to very good condition. A vivid example of postwar American popular culture exploring female criminal archetypes within Western mythology.
