In 1970 kwamen onderzoekers bij een telling tot circa duizend gecomponeerde requiems - en dan hebben we het uitsluitend over doodsmuziek in… de enge zin van het woord. De dood figureert ook prominent in liederen en cantates; in opera's en oratoria gaat zoals bekend ook wel eens iemand dood en ook instrumentale muziek ontkomt die aan het onvermijdelijke. Daarom koos Overbeeke voor een selectieve aanpak, waarmee hij niettemin een groot gebied bestrijkt.
