Owens Kurzroman ist eine neuzeitliche Gestaltung des antiken Mythos vom König Ixion, der im Olymp die Göttin Hera zu verführen glaubt - doch in Wahrheit nur ihr von Zeus aus einer Wolke geschaffenes Ebenbild umfängt und zur Strafe für seine Kühnheit auf ein feuriges Rad geflochten wird. Owen, ein virtuoser Jongleur mit Worten und Metaphern, transponiert die Sage mit Witz und viel Selbstironie nach Mexiko. Der kaleidoskopische innere Monolog des Protagonisten, dem sich die Umwelt ebenso schnell in einen Hollywood-Film wie in ein kubistisches Gemälde verwandelt, führt durch die trubelvolle Hauptstadt mit ihren Kinos und Cafés, an die Küste des Pazifik und in die Minenstadt Pachuca - »ich kenne keine trostlosere Stadt« -, wo sich das Schicksal Ernestos, des neuen Ixion, entscheidet. Die täuschend-enttäuschende Erotik, das in den entgleitenden, ineinander übergehenden Figuren von Ophelia, Eva, Elena und Rosa Amalia ungreifbare Weibliche, wird dabei zum Sinnbild der ewig sich dem poetischen Ausdruck entziehenden Welt, ist aber zugleich sein Movens. Zum Autor Gilberto Owen (1904-1952) zog 1923 nach Mexiko-Stadt und wurde Teil der später als Contemporáneos bekannten Gruppe von jungen Künstlern und Intellektuellen, die in den postrevolutionären Jahren die kulturelle Erneuerung des Landes anführten. An Prosa veröffentlichte Owen auch die Erzählung La llama fría (1925) und Línea (1930) mit Libro de Ruth (1944) und Perseo vencido (1948) schuf er Lyrik von Weltrang, unter dem Einfluß von Góngora, Mallarmé, Valéry, Lewis Carroll, T. S. Eliot und Dickinson. Im Jahr 1928 trat Owen in den Auswärtigen Dienst ein und zog nach New York, wo er sich u. a. mit Lorca, Waldo Frank und Gorham Munson anfreundete. Sein unstetes Leben führte ihn nach Peru, Ecuador, Kolumbien und schließlich Philadelphia, wo Owen, einer der größten mexikanischen Dichter des 20. Jahrhunderts, vereinsamt und vergessen an den Folgen seines Alkoholismus verstarb.
