Elsie Jeanette Dunkerley (1880-1960), was an English girls' story writer, who took her pseudonym from that of her father, the novelist John Oxenham. She is best known for her Abbey Series of stories for girls. In this 22nd book of the series, Lisabel Durrant and Rena Mackay, last seen in Jen of the Abbey School, find themselves at the Rose and Squirrel, Rosamund's new home following her decision to move out and earn her own living. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. There bubbling to the cloth down the spine edges, near the bottom of the front board and bottom corner of the rear board. The spine is slightly faded with bumping and wear to the cloth at the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean very faint traces of an erased inscription or top edge of a removed label on the front free endpaper.

In this story, Rhoda - a schoolgirl of 17 - and her mother find themselves dispossessed by a distant cousin, and her fierce resentment centres around Rosamund, the girl whom this cousin is to marry, and upon whom Rhoda looks as an interpreter and usurper. Intrigues and the family feud run throughout the story, but after exciting events and hard-won victories the end comes to a note of reconciliation and happiness. The book is bound in the original blue boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the bottom of the spine and noticeable fading to the top 1" of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is faded. About 1" is missing from the top of the spine and a piece measuring about 1" x 1/2" is missing from near the corner of the top rear edge. There are tears of about 3/4" on the top front and top rear edges and a few smaller tears on the bottom edges. The front flap has been clipped with a printed price of 6s. showing above the clip. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
