The Metaphysica of Avicenna (ibn Sīnā): A Critical Translation-Commentary and Analysis of the Fundamental Arguments in Avicenna's Metaphysica in the Dānish Nāma-i 'Alā'ī (The Book of Scientific Knowledge). Translated, analyzed, and with commentary by Parviz Morewedge. Published by Columbia University Press in 1973 as Persian Heritage Series No. 13. This important scholarly volume presents an English translation and detailed philosophical analysis of the metaphysical portion of Avicenna's Dānish Nāma-i 'Alā'ī, or Book of Scientific Knowledge. Morewedge examines the fundamental arguments underlying Avicenna's metaphysics and places the Persian philosopher's thought within the broader traditions of Aristotelian, Islamic, and medieval philosophy. Issued as part of the Persian Heritage Series, under the general editorship of Ehsan Yar-Shater, with an advisory council including leading scholars of Persian and Middle Eastern studies. Condition: Very Good hardcover in a Very Good original dust jacket. Blue cloth boards appear clean and well preserved, with a firm binding. Interior pages shown are clean and bright. Original orange dust jacket remains unusually bright and attractive, with light rubbing and shelf wear, minor edge and corner wear, and small creases/chips at the spine ends and corners. No major loss to the jacket. A very presentable copy of a title frequently encountered without its original jacket. Please see photographs for condition details. Collector / Significance: The first edition of an important English-language study and translation of Avicenna's metaphysics. Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, 980-1037) was among the most influential philosophers of the medieval Islamic world, and his writings profoundly affected subsequent Islamic philosophy as well as medieval European scholastic thought. This Columbia University Press edition is particularly desirable in its original illustrated dust jacket and has appeal to collectors and scholars of Islamic philosophy, medieval philosophy, Persian intellectual history, Avicenna studies, and the history of ideas.
