Thorne writes to send an issue in which her uncle George Seldes remembers her "distinguished and fascinating" grandfather, Sergius Seldes. ("I hope you will find somebody who knows Yiddish to read it for you; it is beautifully written and excellently translated.") Thorne also invites Seldes to share any memories she has of her grandfather, who corresponded with Tolstoy and Kropotkin and came to America to escape persecution in Odessa after the assassination of Alexander II. He helped found Alliance, New Jersey, what Marian Seldes calls in a later essay "the first Jewish farm settlement in America." An interesting letter: *Freie arbeter Shtimme* was one of the world's longest-running anarchist journals and, when it ceased publication in 1977, the world's oldest Yiddish newspaper. (N.B.
