The map was drawn and engraved by T. Kitchin, Geographer and Hydrographer to His Majesty, George III. After graduating from St Andrews, Scotsman Patrick Brydone travelled abroad as a companion or tutor, accompanied by William Beckford. In 1770, the gentlemen toured through Sicily and Malta. Brydone's letters were particularly popular for their descriptions of Italy. The work went through seven or eight editions in the author's lifetime. Bound in full tree calf. Externally, some wear. Some rubbing to extremities. Rubbing and loss to leather at lower spine, binder's waste visible. Slight cracking to front joint. Hinge strained at front board. Bookplate to paste down.
