Latinius Pacatus Drepanius was a Gallo-Roman orator and poet. He was probably a professor of rhetoric at Bordeaux and was awarded the rank of proconsul of Africa. This work, considered his most well known is an extant panegyric addressed to Theodosius I at Rome in 389 after the defeat of Maximus. The work is considered the best of its kind and is famed for its vivid style, whilst maintaining dignity and self restraint. It is uncertain whether Pacatus was pagan or Christian, a point which remains much debated by scholars to this day. This particular edition contains notes from a number of prominent scholars including Francisci Jureti, Jani Gruteri and Joannis Schefferi.
