Collection of panegyrics of Roman emperors from the 1st to the 4th century (Trajan, Maximian Augustus, Julian the Apostate, Constantine I and II, Theodosius the Great) by Pliny the Younger, Mamertinus, Eumenes, Nazaire and Drepanius Pacatus. This was used as a source for Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, based on auction records showing that his bookplate appeared in a copy sold by Maggs. Contents include: C. Disbound. Condition: Good Only. A very scarce work of Pacatus Drepaius' Panegryricus, an extant speech, considered the best of its kind. With notes from a number of prominent scholars. Very scarce. With the signatures *-3*â 4* (-4*2) A-Zâ Aa-Ccâ Dd . Collated complete with title page vignette and head and tail pieces. Latinius P…acatus Drepanius was a Gallo-Roman orator and poet. He was probably a professor of rhetoric at Bordeaux and was awarded the rank of proconsul of Africa. This work, considered his most well known is an extant panegyric addressed to Theodosius I at Rome in 389 after the defeat of Maximus. The work is considered the best of its kind and is famed for its vivid style, whilst maintaining dignity and self restraint. It is uncertain whether Pacatus was pagan or Christian, a point which remains much debated by scholars to this day. This particular edition contains notes from a number of prominent scholars including Francisci Jureti, Jani Gruteri and Joannis Schefferi. A very scarce edition of this highly influential speech by noted orator Drepanius. Disbound. Externally generally smart with chipping to the extremities. The first four leaves are detached but present. Internally generally firmly bound although strained in places. Pages generally bright and clean with the occasional tide mark to the extremities.
