Add to basketWe document 74 species of fossil Muricidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda) from Tuscany, belonging to the subfamilies Aspellinae, Coralliophilinae, Ergalataxinae, Muricinae, Ocenebrinae, Pagodulinae, Rapaninae and Typhinae. Many species are paleogeographically widespread while others seem to be local endemics. Especially during the Pliocene, endemicity may have been promoted by the geographic features of Tuscany, then characterised by the presence of an archipelago that may have favoured geographic isolation of small populations. Additionally, ecophenotypic variation linked to particular environmental conditions limited in space and time may have contributed to the arising of local morphs. We introduce Murexsul pliozezae n. sp., Favartia roberti n. sp., and establish these new synonymies: Babelomurex dellabellai (Brunetti, 2004) and B. brugnonei Appolloni & Smriglio, 2024 = B. janianus (Cocconi, 1873); Coralliophila incognita (Foresti, 1882) = C. canaliculata (Bellardi, 1882); Coralliophila horrens (Bellardi, 1873) = C. isseli (Bellardi, 1873); Murex brevicanthos Sismonda, 1847 = Murex brevicanthos Sismonda, 1847 var. aitus De Gregorio, 1885 = Chicoreus (Triplex) michelottii (Bellardi, 1873); Murex rudis (lato sensu D?Ancona, 1871 non M. rudis Borson, 1821), Murex conglobatus Michelotti 1841, Murex pecchiolianus D?Ancona, 1871, Murex campanii De Stefani & Pantanelli, 1879, Murex tapparonii Bellardi, 1873, Murex neomagensis Fontannes, 1879 = Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758); Murex (Hadriania) craticulatus (L.) var. pliocostulata Sacco, 1904 = Gracilipurpura pliosubasuturata (Sacco, 1904); Purpura praecedens Bellardi, 1882, Monoceros cancellatus Bellardi, 1882 = Spinucella monacanthos (Brocchi, 1814); Ocinebrina concerpta var. subacingulata Sacco, 1904 = O. funiculosa (Borson, 1821); Genus Ovulatella Bertaccini, Bongiardino, Gardella, Petracci & Tabanelli, 2024 = Cathymorula Landau, Houart & Marques da Silva, 2007. We also introduced these new combinations: Chicoreus (Triplex) michelottii (Bellardi, 1873) pliotrivaricosus Dominici & Forli, 2021 = Chicoreus (Triplex) pliotrivaricosus Dominici & Forli, 2021, Murex (Hadriania) craticulatus (L.) var. pliosubasuturata Sacco, 1904 = Gracilipurpura pliosubasuturata (Sacco, 1904). In addition, Murexsul neocostatus and Ocinebrina binodus are photographically illustrated, for the first time, in accordance with the original drawings by Pecchioli, 1864. Gracilipurpura pliosubasuturata is reported for the first time for Tuscany. Aspella pacaudi, Lindapterys cervantesorum and Favartia laletania (the latter two reported for the first time in Italy) are present only in a few outcrops in the Fiora Basin (Zanclean) and their discovery reveals a faunal parallel with mollusc assemblages from contemporary Pliocene deposits in Catalonia (Spain). Dermomurex mazzinii, Murexsul neocostatus, Murexsul plionanus, Favartia roberti, Ocenebra meneghiniana, Ocinebrina binodus are likely endemic (~ 9% of species total number). In Mediterranean Sea many genera and related species became extinct at the end of the Pliocene: Lindapterys, Promurex, Chicoreus, Paziella, Purpurellus, Timbellus, Homalocantha, Favartia, Heteropurpura, Jaton, Spinucella, Cathymorula, Taurasia, Siphonochelus and Hirtotyphis. Only 13 (18%) of the 74 species we reported are still living in the Mediterranean Sea. 216 pp., 166 + 3 figs, br. 4.…
