Back cover statement is illustrative of the milieu: STASH was organized by a group of Beloit College students for the purpose of establishing a national student educational facility to provide information on psychedelic drugs and marihuana. The organization operates on two basic principles: 1. That no drug, like everything in our material universe, intrinsically possesses good or bad qaulities; it is only each particular human use of a drug that can be viewed as beneficial or detrimental. Focusing on any particular drug and calling it evil is useless distraction. 2. That drugs, and the variety of ways that people can use or abuse them, are extremely complicated matters - few blanket assertions can be made, and those interested in undertaking action to alleviate society's "drug problem" have the responsibility of educating themselves. This implies acquiring a grasp of the ways in which scientists arrive at conclusions about the psychological, physiological, and other actions of drugs. People, in learning about drugs, must not only study what doctors, pharmacologists, psycholgists, and other authorities have to say, but must bring themselves up to a level of competence permitting critical evaluation of the validity of available information.
