El Libro del arte de las comadres o madrinas y del regimiento de las preñadas y paridas y del los niños, de Damián Carbón, fue publicado en Mallorca en 1541. Es el primer manual de tocoginecología publicado en lengua española. Solo existe una edición del libro,… del que se conocen seis ejemplares. Damián Carbón (h.finales del siglo XV 1554) fue el "medico ordinario de la custodia de la sanidad de aqueste presente Rayno — Ysla de Mallorca. Su padre, Andreu Carbó, era cirujano, y su hijo, Cosme, siguió los pasos de su padre. Su otro hijo, Nicolás, fue boticario. En su vida Carbón fue conocido también como poeta, especialmente por el poema que dedicó a Carlos V, en honor a su visita a Mallorca. Su nombre auténtico era Damià carbó I Malferit, pero firma su trabajo como Damián Carbón; esto refleja, en parte, la situación sociolingüística de la isla en la época en que escribe. El catalán era la lengua corriente en uso, pero el castellano se habíaeimpuesto en los ámbitos ciltos y oficiales. La obra consta de dos partes, con trece años de diferencia en la redacción. La primera, la más extensa, trata de los temas mencionados en el título, y la segunda, de las causas de la infertilidad. El libro fue encargado por un señor desconocido, cuya mujer había sufrido varios abortos. El contenido del libro es bastante teórico, con citas y recetas en latín, por lo que es dudoso que las parteras, de formación empírica, hayan podido beneficiarse de él. Se puede suponer que el público receptor eran los cirujanos, así como los sectores cultos y privilegiados de la sociedad. Nuestra edición contiene, además del texto, un comentario en el que se analiza el lenguaje de Damián Carbón en todos sus niveles: fonología y grafías, morfosintaxis y léxico. Una de las finalidades de nuestro trabajo es situarlo dentro de los esquemas de periodización del castellano. La primera mitad del siglo XVI fue una época de convulsiones, en la que nuevas y viejas estructuras coexistían, fortaleciéndose unas y perdiéndose otras. Es la época en la que también se creaba una terminología médica vernácula, lo cual se puede observar en la vacilación de voces coexistentes aún no consolidadas. Como resultado de la investigación, el lenguaje de la obra se nos presenta conservador dentro de la fase de transición del castellano medieval al clásico.
