Seine Stud. über die Beziehun…gen der Thymus zum Exitus subitus ließen ihn den Status thymico-lymphaticus beschreiben, bei dem er eine Persistenz oder eine Vergrößerung der Drüse und des ganzen lymphat. Gewebes sowie Milztumor als Ursache sonst nicht erklärbarer Todesfälle als eine patholog., konstitutionelle Veranlagung deutete, eine heute umstrittene These aus dem Formenkreis der exsudativen Diathese. Das Phänomen der Ballonierung der Lunge konnte P. durch den Nachweis klären, daß schon während des Ertrinkens Ertränkungsflüssigkeit aus den Lungenbläschen in das Zwischengewebe gelangt. P. bewies mit Hilfe des von Fleischl angegebenen Hämometers, daß die Flüssigkeit zur Blutverdünnung führt" (M. Arnold Paltaufs Arbeit "Zur Kenntniss des Uterus unicornis" (Wien 1885) ist eine frühe, detaillierte anatomisch-pathologische Studie zu einer seltenen kongenitalen Fehlbildung der Gebärmutter. M…edizinhistorisch ist die Arbeit bedeutsam, weil sie einen der frühen systematischen Versuche darstellt, uterine Fehlbildungen mit der Embryologie der Müllerschen Gänge zu verknüpfen und so einen kausalen Entwicklungszusammenhang statt bloßer Kasuistik zu bieten. Paltaufs Befunde wurden in späteren Lehr- und Handbüchern der gynäkologischen Anatomie und Teratologie vielfach zitiert und trugen dazu bei, den Uterus unicornis als klar umrissenes, anatomisch definierbares Krankheitsbild zu etablieren. Arnold Paltauf (1860-1893) war ein österreichischer Pathologe und Gerichtsmediziner, der in Wien bei Eduard von Hofmann und Carl Rokitansky ausgebildet wurde und als Professor der pathologischen Anatomie wirkte. Trotz seines frühen Todes publizierte er eine Reihe wichtiger Arbeiten zur allgemeinen Pathologie (z.B. Sepsis, Mykosen) und zur speziellen Anatomie, darunter Beiträge zur Anatomie der kindlichen Gebärmutter und zur Entwicklungsgeschichte des Uterus unicornis.
