The history of the Krakow ghetto as told by a Polish pharmacist Tadeusz Pankiewicz, witnessing the tragedy of Krakow's Jews unfolding beneath the windows of his pharmacy, saved them from oblivion by faithfully recording the history of the ghetto. The book was first published in 1947. Tadeusz Pankiewicz worked and lived in the ghetto for two and a half years. He survived all stages of its existence: from the closing of the gates and the first persecutions, through the increasingly dangerous and cruel deportations, to its complete liquidation. During this time, the 'Pod Or?em' pharmacy served - in addition to its normal functions, which were gradually shrinking - as a refuge and a point of contact between two worlds: the Jewish population locked within the walls and the 'free' population living outside them; its staff became a link between these two worlds. Here, one could read the latest news from the front, familiarise oneself with the underground press, and find shelter during night-time arrests. Letters and parcels for people living on the Aryan side were left here, and messages and parcels from them were collected. The few inhabitants of the ghetto who managed to survive the cruel times of war still remember the 'Pod Or?em' pharmacy and its owner with gratitude. . No damage . A small label on the back cover.
