Octavo slim bookmark sized softcovers (VG+); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Condition: Good. Blank sheet of laid paper countermarked with capital "I" at lower right edge (Southern French papermakers often positioned watermarks at bottom of sheet). Possibly Jean Villedary, a firm of French papermakers active at Angoumois from 1668 to 1758, then from 1758 to 1812 at Guelderland in North Holland. Condition: Good. Sheet of laid paper folded into pages. Verso watermarked with plumes. No date or initials, otherwise similar to Heawood 1341. Recto watermarked with unidentified coat of arms with crest of crossed drumsticks and cock's comb. Shield bearing crossed cannon quartered with stag's heads with dragon? supporters. 16-1/2 X 13 inches; 42 X 33 cm. Handling wear; small hole at upper right; center crease torn but pages still attached.Good. Condition: Good. Single sheet of laid paper watermarked with the "Lily of Strasbourg," a simple shield bearing the Lily of Strasbourg (fleur de lys), with crown as crest. The mark originated in the city of Strasbourg in France in 1675, but cannot be relied on to indicate place or date by itself, as it was widely copied and used in France, Holland, and other countries into the 19th century. One indication of age is the mark's position within the chainlines; the original was centered over a chainline, as here. But this is not conclusive. 7-7/8 X 12-1/16 inches; 20 X 30.5 cm. Condition: Good. Blank sheet of laid paper watermarked with "Strasbourg Bend"; a shield bearing a bend sinister with a fleur de lys crest. Set symmetrically between chainlines. First used in the French city of Strasbourg in 1675, this watermark was widely reused and copied by papermakers in Holland, France, England, and elsewhere, so without countermark is not a good indicator of place of manufacture. Similar to Heawood 69, 71, 78. 11 X 1-3/8 inches; 28 X 33.9 cm. Soiled. Vertical crease. Tattered left edge where removed from binding. Good. Two handmade paper samples, with printed descriptive text and address, and listing of papermaking plant materials used in some of the papers, and a price list of types & sizes of paper then available [1977], on an 8 1/2 in. x 11 in. sheet of folded, light green Carriage House Paper Works stationary, with a printed Carriage House business card, inserted in this folded list; and an autograph letter, signed by papermaker Elaine Koretsky, written on a 5 in. x 7 1/4 in. sheet of handmade paper, and sent with the other materials, to a Cleveland, Ohio book and handmade paper collector, in 1977: "[-]Enclosed is a price list, plus a listing of our papers, (fiber content) that we've been making in the past year-but some of these may not be currently available because of the season of the year [Spring]-we grow a lot of the plants we use. [signed]: Elaine Koretsky." [Partial text and fiber-types notes from the printed samples]: "Handmade Paper To look at, to look through, touch, enjoy Paper for drawing, printing, writing Paper for special thoughts, dreams, ideas Creative paper, magic paper.made of lovely plants [-]: banana; iris-banana; begonia-banana; banana-red kelp; banana-seaweed; sisal-nasturtium; peony-banana; sisal-papyrus; sisal-clivia; dyed banana." Scarce items, preserved in the original, design & address printed Carriage House mailing envelope (this envelope shows the back flap torn off, and some damp spots, marks to the surface. Sold together only, as a set of five items in the original mailing envelope. Signed by Author(s).

An autograph letter signed, on a 5 3/4 in. x 7 3/4 in. sheet of specially made, and textured white paper, with the embossed maple leaf, and words: Maple Creek in the lower left corner; a printed notice for the Maple Creek Summer Workshops, Instructor: Edward Pieters; with details, and unused enrollment card, and three, various sized, pastel colored paper samples: [1] 6 in. x 8 1/4 in. sheet of cream-tan, textured paper; [2] a folded sheet of 16 in. x 11 in., textured, pink paper with maple leaf watermark; [3] a 16 3/4 in. x 11 in. sheet of textured, light lavender paper with the maple leaf watermark. The letter and samples were sent to a book & handmade paper collector in Cleveland, Ohio in 1981: "[-] It was delightful chatting with you during my Cleveland visit. You have a wonderful collection of papers. Here are some papers from our Studio [-] -notice the [maple leaf] water mark on the larger sheets. [-] In November [1981] we're having a paper show in our gallery featuring works of paper and hand made papers from the U. S. and Mexico. I'm sure you'd enjoy it [-] [signed]: Paula Matther." These items are preserved in the original brown paper mailing envelope (some notes have been added to the front of this in magic marker, by the original recipient). Fawsley Hall and landscape park was created by the Knightley family. Richard Knightley, a well-to-do Staffordshire lawyer, bought the manor of Fawsley in 1416. His grandson Richard, knighted by Henry VII, built the first wing of the present house. 6 original architecture drawings from Fawsley Hall on hand made wove paper 'J. Vetusta Monumenta is the title of a published series of illustrated antiquarian papers on ancient buildings, sites, and artefacts, mostly those of Britain, published at irregular intervals between 1718 and 1906. Hand made wove paper 'J. Whatman, Turkey Mill, 1827' watermark. Light grey folding card covers with title in black to the front cover. Elephant folio 22½'' x 15¼''. Containing 3 single sheet plates, 1 double sheet plate (Palace of Westminster). 8 pages of text (Palace of Westminster), 4 pages of text (Swords of State Belonging to the Earldom of Chester) and 2 pages of text (The Obelisk at Forres, Morayshire, North Britain. Called Sueno's Stone). William Capon, an architect and scene painter known for his depictions of historic buildings, lived in Westminster and surveyed the Old Palace of Westminster between 1793 and 1823. This plan was purchased from him by the Society of Antiquaries in 1826 which had it engraved and published in 1828. Old water stains to the edges of the single plates, and to the centre and the edges of the double plate, and to the centre of the card covers, small tears to the edges of the plates.
