Add to basket1p., landscape 16mo (8.5 x 13 cm). Good, on aged paper, with blank second leaf of bifolium bearing evidence of previous mounting. The poem is neatly written out, in a sensitive hand, and is eight lines long: 'Fairyland! Fairyland! | That must be a pleasant spot: | Silver rippled over the strand, | Murmurs in each cave & grot, | Jewelled fruits upon the trees, | Music floating on the air, | Perfumes breathing on the breeze -, | How I wish that I was there! | [signed] Julia S. H. Pardoe'. The poem was presumably written in response to a request for an autograph, and there is no indication that it was ever published.

A nice letter to a social acquaintance. Written in Pardoe's light, sloping hand. Julia Pardoe (1804-1862) was an English poet, novelist, and travel writer known for her lively and accessible works on European and Near Eastern subjects. She achieved early success with her poetry before turning to prose, publishing popular historical romances and richly detailed accounts of her travels, particularly in Ottoman Empire and Turkey. Her best-known works include The City of the Sultan and The Beauties of the Bosphorus, which helped shape Victorian perceptions of the East. Pardoe was a prolific and widely read author, admired for combining keen observation with engaging narrative style.

Add to basket135x83mm. Single sheet, one sided. Folded. Small loss to the head, and a pasted caption to the verso. Dated September 11, headed at Chester Square, Belgrave District. In black ink, it reads: 'Dear Sir - | I have just received you | note, and shall be happy | to comply with your request, | not being for the moment | very closely engaged. I must | endeavour to ascertain | the actual subject of the | design, which is evidently | historical, as it would be | better not to divest its meaning | if it can be avoided, after | which I will at once write the | paper. Dear Sir | Faithfully yours | Julia Pardoe'. The recipient of this letter is not known, but the content and tone suit those to her publisher. The subject here, is a request to write a paper, and the subject of design which is 'evidently historical'. Pardoe manuscript is scarce.
