Profusely illustrated with BW photos in fine condition. Two fold-out maps also in fine condition. Book.

Important guide for the history of garden art in the estates surrounding Paris where the architecture, gardens, statuary and features (fountains, canals, cascades, pavilions, orangeries, boxquets or theatres) are worthy of note; some 90 are named. Among these are Chatilly, Courances, Fontainebleau, Liancourt, Marly, Meudon, Rambouillet, Saint Cloud, Sceaux and Versailles. The work is the third edition, corrected and enlarged. Divided into 20 chapters according to quartier, the author describes the architecture, monuments, gardens, paintings and sculpture in each area. Two indexes list places mentioned, and the names of architects, painters and sculptors. A very good copy with only a few tiny spots. Guide to Paris in French with descriptions of 47 numbered sights, printed to accompany an engraved Panorama (not present here). Following a short foreword the descriptions of the sights begin after the sentence "Actuellement consultons la gravure". Platon Petrowitsch Beketow (1761-1836) was active both as a publisher and an engraver, and opened his Moscow printing office in 1801.
