Octavo, cream cloth (hardcover), 212 pp. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The transformation of a house, a physical structure, into a home, has been in our culture a traditional task of women. The importance of this work has frequently been overlooked. The articles collected here examine this process of the making of the home, the adaptation and decoration of the house itself and the creation, selection, and arrangement of objects within it as they reflected the role of American middle-class women as homemakers in the years from 1840 to 1940. The creative domestic products and processes for which women traditionally have been responsible have been most commonly relegated to the devalued category of the merely decorative or functional, if indeed they are accorded any artistic status at all. Traditional women's domestic tasks have frequently been viewed as outside the realm of useful production. Recently, many scholars have begun to question these assumptions and to attempt to view the unpaid domestic activities of women as valid and valuable in aesthetic as well as economic terms. Considering the significance and pervasiveness of the association of women with the home, it is logical to wonder what the house and the objects used in its decoration can tell us about women's lives. Much of the recent research that has been conducted on the history of women has examined women as actors -- altering their environment, adapting the advice they received, and expressing their own views, albeit often covertly -- rather than as passive consumers and followers. The arcitles in this collection represent an interdisciplinary approach to the study of women's transformation of the domestic environment: their making of the American home from 1840 to 1940. The articles use a wide range of source materials and methods to examine American Women's domestic material culture in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
