Boston, Massachusetts. Science Books International. Limited Edition. Book number 1 of 300 copies published. Signed by W. Patrick McCafferty and the illustrator, Arwin V. Provonsha, on the limitation page. 1981. Quarto (12 x 9). 448 pp. including appendix, glossary, index. Colophon. This book was owned by the late Frank Matarelli, legendary San Francisco fly dressing tool maker, for thirty plus years. Laid-in is the scarce and large publisher's prospectus (34 x 22 inches). Also two letters, one from the publisher addressed to Mr Matarelli reserving Copy #1 for him, and the second addressed to the publisher from Frank Matarelli Jr. thanking the publisher. This book has stunning color plates of waterborn insects. Black and white text illustrations, hundreds of them. Although the book is forty years on since its publication, it remains, today, the final word on aquatic entomology for fly fishermen and fisherwomen. The book is bound in full brown pigskin with a blind stamped May Fly on the front cover and brown gilt titles on the spine. Brown cloth slip case with titling label on the side panel showing a large colored may fly. A gorgeous book. Fine in a fine slip case.
